Contenidos LocalesLocal Content,” (Contenidos Locales)a new Chilean community website collects has been launched in Chile,  part of the national BiblioRedes.

Local content is a virtual community created by the program Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums (DIBAM), present in 425 public libraries in Chile.  Since 2002, Biblioredes has promoted the inclusion of thousands of people, offering through public libraries free Internet access, digital literacy courses and support local communities in generating web pages with information about their towns and villages.

Anyone can contribute to Local Content regardless of whether they live in Chile or are Chilean.

El Programa BiblioRedes de la Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos (DIBAM), lanzará a la web la Comunidad de Contenidos Locales, una comunidad virtual que busca ser un espacio de interacción para las personas a las que les gusta compartir, conversar y crear contenidos digitales sobre Chile.

Desde el año 2002, BiblioRedes ha promovido la inclusión digital de miles de personas, ofreciendo a través de bibliotecas públicas acceso gratuito a Internet, cursos de alfabetización digital y apoyando a las comunidades locales en la generación de páginas web con información de sus ciudades y pueblos.

Vietnam Internetrepost from IAALD.

An estimated 10,000 people in rural areas of three Vietnamese provinces will have better access to the internet with the implementation of a US$2.1 million project supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Work on the project was kicked off by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) on Monday.

The European Foundation Centre (EFC) is an independent international not-for-profit association, which aims to promote the work of foundations and corporate funders in and with Europe. Based in Brussels, Belgium, the EFC requires one full-time ‘Information Department Intern’ for the period of one year (Sept 2009-2010). Note: internship is for EU residents.

The Knowledge and Information Management Department aims to collect, manage and disseminate information on the foundation and corporate funder community in Europe as well as on EFC member foundations.
Job duties for this position include:
• Dealing with information requests and help the staff of the department in various tasks such as the maintenance of the website content
• Creating profiles of new member foundations as they join the EFC, and entering them into the database.
• Maintaining and updating current member profiles using websites, annual reports and other publicly available resources
• Involvement in all stages and aspects of producing overviews of the EFC membership, including research, profile writing and editing
• Giving assistance with the management of the bibliographical database as well as with its related services (loan management, periodical recording, …)
• Additional administrative work, especially related to the dissemination and storage of EFC publications and the reception
• Giving assistance to the Communication department looking for information, giving administrative or editing support

The candidate should be preferably a student or recent graduated in Information Sciences/Library. Applicant must have good analytical and organizational skills; excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of other European languages is a definite asset. Proficiency in Microsoft Word required, experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Dynamics a plus.

Internship period: 12 months, starting end of August or beginning of September 2009 (to be discussed).

The EFC offers:
• A stipend of €650 per month
• One roundtrip ticket back home with a limited cost of €300
• A language course with a limited cost of 125 Euros/year (half paid at the beginning of the course, the other half paid at the end under the reception of the ‘diploma’)
• 24 days paid holiday
• Work insurance
• Bus/Metro pass within Brussels during your internship period

The Lubuto Library Project is accepting applications for a Lubuto Literacy Fellow to help with literacy programming in libraries in Zambia. Qualified library professionals may apply for this Fulbright position to develop the literacy program and to teach children’s literature and library services to children at the University of Zambia, to both education and library studies students.

The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in a library-related field and expertise in teaching library and information science.  As Fulbright award #9109, the position will include a salary and living stipend for the candidate and his/her family for one year.

The opening is for the 2010-2011 academic year.  Applications will not be accepted until early March 2009.
